Pablo Picasso and Dora Maar

A dialogue with the Fondation Beyeler

Pablo Picasso and Dora Maar. A Dialogue with the Fondation Beyeler is the first chapter of Beyond the Collection, Pinacoteca’s new yearly project to reactivate its permanent collection. On view through September 25th, 2022, the exhibition, curated by Sarah Cosulich, Lucrezia Calabrò Visconti and Beatrice Zanelli, features a dialogue between Pablo Picasso and Dora Maar, focusing on their work. Pablo Picasso’s work investigates another aspect of the Spanish painter’s painting: how personal interaction affects his paintings in different ways.

Picasso’s canvases, in fact, dialogue with a series of photographs by Dora Maar, surrealist photographer and painter, Picasso’s muse, but also a major intellectual reference point for the Spanish artist. Going against the usual art history, which has always focused on the figure of Pablo Picasso, this exhibition project focuses on the influence Dora Maar had on the painter’s practice, thus placing itself in continuity with contemporary research that rediscovers female figures in twentieth-century art.
