Immortal Gaze

“It is the mission to shed light on injustice that has most strongly guided my work as a photographer.”
Sebastião Salgado is gone. He passed away last May, leaving behind, through his immense photographic legacy, a profound testimony of his gaze upon human life and the planet – a gaze marked by ecological sensitivity and a desire to fight for change. In the International Year of Glacier Preservation, his latest project Glaciers reveals the beauty of Antarctica through images on display at the Mart in Rovereto until 21 September 2025 and at MUSE in Trento until 11 January 2026, alongside a book published by Contrasto. From the Antarctic Peninsula to Canada, from Patagonia to the Himalayas, from South Georgia to Russia, these black-and-white photographs portray places under study by researchers investigating both the geological history of our planet and the short- and long-term consequences of the climate crisis and global warming.
Once again, Salgado invites us to look- consciously, respectfully- at the Earth we inhabit. His images speak to us as both warning and promise: they suggest the possibility of a renewed relationship with nature, one built on care, responsibility, and wonder. mart.tn.it muse.it
