An exhibition at Palazzo Reale, Milan
From September 22, 2022, to January 29, 2023, Palazzo Reale in Milan dedicates an exhibition to Richard Avedon, the legendary fashion photographer. Sponsored by the City of Milan, the exhibition is produced and organized by Palazzo Reale and Skira Editore, in collaboration with the Center for Creative Photography and the Richard Avedon Foundation. The 106 works on display tell the essence of ‘relating,’ which happens through looks, the details of clothes, faces, and bodies.

Richard Avedon radically changed the way of handling photo shoots, shortening the distance between the lens and the subject; the focus falls on the emotionality of the people shot and the intimacy, which shines through precisely in the immediacy of gestures and expressions, during the shots. His models or posing characters are the stars, regardless of the context and their professional or social role. Avedon’s typical black and white is warm and deep, infused with movement, so full of nuance and dynamism that it becomes full color.
Another kind of relationship stands out in this very rich review, that between the camera and the detail of the garment photographed. Incisive and fundamental, for example, was the photographer’s role in the success of Versace’s collections, first with Gianni and later with Donatella. The enduring relationships, both professional and friendly, between Richard Avedon and models, designers, politicians, and artists are forever fixed over the years.
