Painting is meditation
The Museo Correr, in Venice, until November 6, 2022, hosts the site-specific installation ‘Ascension’ by Huong Dodinh, a Vietnamese artist. The installation engages the viewer in a sequential path that leads to concentration and immersion; it is an individual experience to be lived in the silence of the ‘Hall of the Four Doors’. The exhibition includes fourteen vertical paintings, each three meters high, which unfold in a triangular pattern around the 15th-century figure of Madonna della Misericordia (‘Our Lady of Mercy’). The ensemble surrounds the visitor, making them the protagonist, in the contrast between darkness and light.

The contrast between dark and light is essential when observing and contemplating the works of the Vietnamese painter. Indeed, her unique technique, which stratifies multiple layers of paint and geometric shapes, gives the canvases an extraordinary depth and density that reveal the evanescent luminosity of her works. ‘Ascension’ is one of the very few exhibitions dedicated to an artist who has spent her life painting, refining a technique, and at the same time expressing herself. The exhibition at Museo Correr is curated by Hervé Mikaeloff and Amin Jaffer, with the scientific direction of Gabriella Belli, the collaboration of Nicoletta Fiorucci, CMS Collection and the support of Pace Gallery.
